On the heels of the 2020 World Figure Skating Championships in Montreal, Quebec, Skate Canada has announced further skating competition cancellations and restrictions in the midst of COVID-19 pandemic.
From the coast to coast, over 20 competitions have been cancelled, including Skate BC/YT’s STAR Competition in Burnaby, BC from March 21 to 22, 2020. Skate Canada Manitoba’s (SCM) Crocus Invitational Synchronized Skating Championships – slated for this weekend in Roblin, Manitoba. And Skate Newfoundland and Labrador’s 2020 Atlantic Canada Skating Championships, from March 27 to 29 in Paradise, NL.
The World Health Organization (WHO) declared COVID-19 a global pandemic, which eventually prompted U.S. President Donald Trump to slap 26 European countries with a travel ban. Dealing another blow for the synchronized skating community who were preparing to compete at the 2020 World Synchronized Skating Championships in Lake Placid, New York. Early this week, New York issued a state of emergency and placed restrictions on gatherings over 500 people.
On March 11, Canadian ice dancing champions, Paul Poirier and Piper Gilles, reacted to the cancellation to the 2020 Worlds during a Skate Canada press conference remotely.
“I think Paul and I are both a little disappointed obviously,” said Gilles, “and every athlete is a little disappointed … we’ve all put so much time and effort and our heart and soul into training for the world championships.”

Disappointment isn’t reserved for professional athletes alone. The final competition of Manitoba’s season, the annual Stony on Ice, was scheduled from March 27 to 29. The Stony Mountain Skating Club runs the inter-provincial event, which draw skaters from Thompson, MB to Kenora, ON.
Figure skating is one of a growing list of sports impacted by COVID-19.
